The idea sounded solid, so we built it in traditional linear development from early sketches, full concept, and even construction an asset – one to use in “Homeworld 3”. The concept team decided to use the Civilian Tanker from Homeworld 2 as a base with the backstory of pirates stealing civil ships and retrofitting them to their own use. We first thought that it was to start with some more expensive concepts from Homeworld 2. I heard that the Kalan Raiders were forming their own ideas in 2020, then just called them the Pirates and that was about very early in the story and I focused much of the time on their visual backstory.
